Nestled in the southwesternmost corner of the Netherlands, Cadzand is a charming village divided into three parts: Cadzand-Bad, Cadzand-Dorp, and Retranchement. Once a quiet coastal community, Cadzand-Bad has undergone a dramatic transformation, driven by wealthy Belgian investors who have turned it into a luxury holiday destination. Today, massive neo-Norman holiday complexes with white facades and red roofs dominate the landscape, driving up property prices and displacing local residents. Just a kilometer inland, Cadzand-Dorp faces a similar fate. In 2022, it saw the fastest decline of local inhabitants of any Dutch village. As Belgium’s elite seaside resort, Knokke, becomes overcrowded and heavily urbanized, wealthy Belgians are flocking to Cadzand as their next escape.

This documentary delves into the struggle of local residents to protect their heritage, natural environment, and community against the relentless pressures of commercialization. How can a small village stand firm against the unstoppable tide of tourism and investment?

Ons Campertje

Director: Diny van Hoften. Screenwriter: Hans Dortmans. Country: NL. Status: in production. Release: end of 2025. Sort: documentary. Duration: 55 min. Genre: human interest . Omroep Max/COBO Fonds

Former military officer Hans Hanswijk (71) embarks on a profoundly personal journey in his camper, retracing the bittersweet love story of his life. His wife, Wil is slipping away to dementia, but Hans refuses to let her go. Rather than placing her in a nursing home, he takes her on a road trip across Europe—fleeing the inevitable and chasing fleeting moments of clarity. With survival instincts he honed in the army, Hans fights against time on the open road. As long as they keep moving, there’s no final destination. Somewhere along a quiet Balkan road or in the Spanish countryside, Hans dreams that Wil might return to him—if only for a moment. Ons Campertje is a tender and heartbreaking documentary about love, loss, and one man’s unwavering devotion as he searches for the woman he’s already begun to lose.
